They did it, and we couldn’t be happier; the Springfield XDs in a 9mm.
We hope a 40 S&W version is next…(spoiler alert: it is)
If you missed our review on the Springfield XDs 45, be sure to check that out as well. As these are very similar firearms, we will be using much of the same information from our previous review of the 45 version.
The Springfield XDs 9mm is classified as a sub-compact, single stack 9mm. It measures 4.4″ high, 6.3″ long and just 1″ in width. This thing is tiny and feels great both in hand and on hip. The capacity is slightly lacking, being a single stack, and will only accommodate 7 rounds in the magazine +1 in the chamber. You do have the option for the extended magazine which would provide you with 9+1, however this adds considerable height to the firearm. Overall with the 7 rounder, this firearm is nice and slim; perfect for a tight fit against your hip.

Just as the 45 version, I have found it to be extremely manageable when it comes to recoil and follow-up shots. With the 9mm version, this is a great ‘starter’ firearm for someone who is newer to concealed carry. The design is pretty flawless and allows for ease of control, especially with follow-ups. Again, much less recoil than the 45 version (as expected), but still very manageable considering it’s small size.
The safeties on this firearm were what drew me to it in the first place. I am not a fan of manual safeties, as under pressure they may be difficult to disengage. If you want to argue with me on this, I can already tell you that your argument is invalid because it is impossible to run through and be prepared for every single situation that may arise.
Aside from the trigger safety and loaded chamber indicator, they have implemented a back-strap safety that needs a firm grip in order to disengage. This is a genius concept that they have had for years, as you would be putting pressure on that part of the firearm whenever you were to pull the trigger. It also helps to teach proper grip while training. It’s a win-win design.
The XDs 9mm has worked flawlessly out of the box, and continues to provide nothing but great times at the range. As with all of my firearms, I removed all of the factory lubrication and gave it a treatment with Eezox Synthetic Lubricant. I expect nothing but perfection when it comes to a concealed carry firearm, and this XDs fits the bill 100%. I have yet to hear negative feedback for this firearm, and am pretty confident that Springfield has it nailed. Again, here’s hoping for a 40 S&W version (that’s directed at you, Springfield). Word on the street is that this is a done deal.
Side note on reliability: Springfield recommends running the firearm WET the first few trips to the range to allow a smooth break-in period. CLICK HERE to download the PDF showing Points of Lubrication for the Springfield XDs 9mm and 45ACP
The grip. Well, unless your hands are made out of stone, be prepared to hurt after a few rounds. The grip etching is pretty rough, and I ended up throwing on some Talon Grips to make it a little more comfortable. This is obviously personal preference, as some people enjoy the grip very much. It’s definitely not as bad shooting this vs the 45, but I still find the grip to be very abrasive.
We’ll talk breakdown. This firearm is very easy to take down, and even easier to clean. My only hangup in this department is the feed ramp on the barrel. If you’re cleaning the barrel, watch your fingers and hands on that sharp feed ramp! It’s gone into my skin a few times and let me tell you, it’s sharp and painful. Keeping this in mind, you should be all set.
The XDs 9mm is a great little firearm and a lot of fun to shoot. I trust it with my life to carry it daily, and to me, that speaks volumes about the firearm and the manufacturer. Not to mention if you ever have a question or concern, Springfield customer service is one of the greatest to work with. Anytime I have needed to call, they were very polite and courteous, and always resolved anything that the call was regarding. For this, I say Thank You Springfield, you have a customer for life.
